I am not saying this is all necessarily wrong, but I do have somewhat of a problem with it. Therefore it is only the women that either have lesser parts or are considered less powerful. While there are powerful women in the show, such as Daenerys Targaryen, she is rarely if ever shown to be completely naked. I realize that they are just trying to make the show realistic and edgy and yes, I know how graphic the books are, but it just does not seem fair to show fully nude shots of women yet not men. Additionally it is not an empowering site to see men undressing prostitutes in nearly every scene. It is one thing to watch a sex scene yet, it is another thing to watch a rape scene in which the girl is shown naked. I studied this aspect of media in my Women’s Studies class last semester and learned that oftentimes the key to taking away a characters’ power is to show them naked or in a vulnerable position. I am not exactly sure why this issue bothers me, but it seems as if the women are being presented as bodies while the men are able to keep their “decency” in being clothed.
This is not just an issue with Game of Thrones but with nearly every TV show or movie that contains nudity. Not that I have a problem with women being naked or proud of their bodies and in fact, all the power to them if they want to strip on screen! But what I do have an issue with is how often women are shown naked and how few times men are. Yet, I would like to bring up an aspect of the show that I am not a huge fan of the amount of times naked women are shown.
So, for this week I would like to discuss one of my favorite shows of all time Game of Thrones.
